Want the look of the Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² ?
Mercedes G65 Portal Axle Conversion by GwagenParts
The Solution? Portal Axles & 4″ Suspension Lift!
Now, G-class also known as a G-wagon owners can get a 10-12″ net lift (portal axle conversion, 2″ or 4″ lift kit, and 37″ tires) to sit as high — and wide — as the G550 4×4². However, most clients call with the understanding that the portal axles conversion includes everything they need, or that the lift kit includes everything they need, to emulate the Mercedes G550 4×4². But that’s not the case. You can do one or the other to lift the vehicle, or you can combine the kits to reach new heights (pun intended)!
The portal axle conversion is perfect for clients that want to lift the vehicle (5 inch lift), gain ground clearance, use a larger tire, give the vehicle a much wider stance, add larger fender flares, and not touch the suspension (or the suspension geometry). They can install the portal axle conversion, 35″ tires, and call it a day. Simple. No codes, no issues, and stock suspension.
Alternately, clients can install a 4″ lift kit, add 35″ tires, and call it a day. They don’t get the ground clearance, or the width/stance, and they may run into issues with changing the geometry and tire size. We have products to address the changes in geometry, but we don’t have a rock solid solution to issues arising from tire size (e.g., ABS, ESP) because it’s intermittent. In fact, we have not run into this issue here, or with our clients, but we have definitely heard of it. Our Project Car has the 4″ lift kit with 35″ tires — no problems whatsoever. But to be honest, we were hoping to have the issue with ABS and ESP…better on our car than a customer’s car, and that way, we would be forced to find a solution, should it ever come up again.
PORTAL KIT OVERVIEW:
What is a Portal Kit? Basically, a portal box bolts to your existing hub, and then the wheels bolts to the bottom of the portal — that’s how you lift the entire vehicle (from the axle up) off the ground. You can read more here.

- Portals bolt-on to your existing axles.
- Instantly get a 125 mm lift (~5 inches)
- Additional “lift” or height increase from our 4″ lift kit and larger tires.
- Proprietary 4-gear design:
– Maintains the turning momentum of the wheels
– Reduces the load and stress on the teeth of the gears
– Reduces the temperature in the Portal box - The Portal gear ratio of 1.22:1 will:
– Match the larger tire size to maintain power and acceleration. A stock 275/50-20 has an overall diameter off 30.83,” so if you are using a 35″ tire, the increase in overall diameter must be accounted for.
– Reduce stress and strain on drivetrain from larger tires. - Newly developed wheel sensors keep your ABS and ESP working properly, with no Errors or Codes.
- No additional costly change on the suspension, steering, or differential required.
- Minimum tire size should not be less than 255/85R16 (or 33″).
- Maximum recommended size should not be more than 315/75-16 (35”). Please inquire if you like to run larger tires (e.g., 37″ tires).
- Vehicle gross weight should not be more than 3.5 tons (3500 kg). The warranty on the parts is void if weight is in excess of 3.5 tons.
- Portals come with a manufacturer’s limited 1 year warranty against defects in material and craftsmanship prior to installation.
- Installation should be done by a skilled and trained mechanic.

This package includes the components you need to get the 0ff-roadability of the Mercedes G550 4×4, as well as the width and height. This package assumes the use of your stock wheels. You may want to add other components, such as Beadlock Wheels or Electric Side Steps, but this package gets you very close to the look of the Squared (which doesn’t have Beadlock Wheels or Electric Side Steps either). If we have the vehicle here, we can build a hoop for dual shocks Front and Rear to get you even closer to the look of the Squared.
If you want to include every detail of the Mercedes G550 4×4, from the Rear Tube Bumper to the pushed out Side Markers and Mirrors, and from the 22″ Forged Wheels to the 4×4 Emblem on the rear, we can do provide the parts.
