Portal Axle Conversion for Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG

For this project, the client wants to build an even more capable off-roader with a portal axle kit, G550 springs, custom KING shocks, widened fender arches, and 35×12.5R18 Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. The portal axle kit adds 125mm of axle clearance, plus he’ll see another 50mm of clearance from the tires, so about 175mm (7 inches) in all.
In the first few photos below, you’ll see the “before” (stock) G55 parked near a vehicle with our 4×4 LITE package. That vehicle has a 6″ lift, so the G55 is going to be higher and just as wide — without a suspension lift. The customer could add a 2″, 3″, or 4″ lift in the future, if he chooses. A 2″ lift will be required to use 37″ tires, so we’ll be using 18″ beadlock wheels with 35″ tires. The wheels are CTIS compatible, so that’s another feature that could be added at a later time.
