Old Mercedes G-Class Is Now Off-Road Restomod from Lorinser

This rig originally served in the Swiss Army. Now, it has a new life.

Lorinser Classic, a division of the well-known Mercedes-Benz tuner, gives this 1993 G-Class from the Swiss Army the restomod treatment so that the off-roader can keep climbing through the Alps for years to come. The rig is currently for sale for 39,500 euros ($44,670 at current exchange rates), which seems fairly reasonable for such a fun looking machine.

“There are many original Army off-road vehicles – so we didn’t just want to restore the base to its original condition, we wanted to create something new,” Managing Director Marcus Lorinser said about the creation.

This G-Class is a long-wheelbase, troop transport variant. The red covering can come off and allow for completely opening driving. In the back, there are two rows of facing fold-down benches for carrying your entire squad into the wilderness.

Lorinser Classic gives the old off-roader a rugged matte black body and the eye-popping red roof covering, and the interior wears the same color combination. It rides on a set of black 16-inch five-spoke wheels with Puch center caps and beefy BF Goodrich all-terrain tires. Up front, Lorinser fits a new bumper with an integrated winch and LED lights.

While a modern G-Class would likely come with a high-horsepower V8, these old military models aren’t quite so powerful. This is a 230 GE variant with 2.3-liter four-cylinder making a rousing 114 horsepower (85 kilowatts) that runs through a four-speed automatic.

Looking closely, you might notice that this G-Class lacks the Mercedes star emblem, and that’s because this model is technically from the Austrian company Puch. The business is likely better known in the United States for its mopeds, but the firm also built the Geländewagen as a joint venture with Mercedes until 2000.
