Mercedes Compact G-Class: What We Know So Far
Mercedes-Benz, renowned for its luxury SUVs, is taking a step further by introducing the “Little G” – a smaller, electric version of the iconic G-Class SUV. This compact model, known as the Mercedes-Benz g-Class, is set to deliver the same blend of off-road prowess and opulence as its larger sibling but in a more compact and electrified package.
The Legacy of the G-Class
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, affectionately called the G-Wagen, has an illustrious history. Originally designed as a rugged military vehicle, it later became the iconic choice for those seeking unparalleled off-road capabilities and automotive exclusivity. However, the G-Class’s exclusivity comes at a price, often commanding six-figure sums.
Mercedes-Benz aims to carry forward the G-Class legacy into the electric era with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQG, expected in 2025. But that’s not all; there’s another exciting addition in the works.
Introducing the Mercedes-Benz g-Class
At the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA Mobility 2023) in Germany, Mercedes-Benz Chairman Ola Kallenius unveiled an intriguing surprise. The company is developing a smaller version of the beloved G-Class SUV, aptly named the Mercedes-Benz g-Class or “little g.” This compact SUV will have the monumental task of preserving the G-Class’s legacy but in a more compact and efficient form.
Electric and Capable
One of the most significant revelations about the little g is its electric powertrain. Mercedes-Benz is embracing electrification, and the compact g-Class will be no exception. While exact specifications remain undisclosed, the electric platform chosen for this model could be the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), known for impressive features like:
- A driving range of over 466 miles (750 km)
- Quick 800 V recharging, adding 248 miles (400 km) in just 15 minutes
- A 40% reduction in value-chain carbon emissions
Alternatively, the g-Class might adopt the Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture (MB.EA), one of the brand’s EV platforms launching from 2025 onwards. Despite being designed for midsize and full-size models, the modular nature of MB.EA leaves room for flexibility, making it suitable for the compact g-Class.
Release Date
As for the release date, Mercedes-Benz’s Chairman Ola Kallenius stated that the “little g-Class” would debut “a few years from now.” While the exact year remains unconfirmed, it’s speculated that it might hit the market for the 2026 model year, aligning with Mercedes-Benz’s plans to launch new EV platforms in 2025.
Pricing
Mercedes-Benz has yet to announce the price of the baby G-Wagen. However, considering the G-Class’s iconic status, the brand’s emphasis on value over volume, and the electrified powertrain, the Mercedes-Benz g-Class is likely to come at a premium compared to the compact GLC, which currently starts between $47,100 and $54,700.
It’s reasonable to assume that the baby G-Wagen will be more affordable than the larger Mercedes-Benz EQG, expected to start at roughly $150,000.
The Current G-Class Lineup
As of September 2023, the Mercedes-Benz G-550 SUV is the most affordable G-Class in the USA, starting at $139,900. It features a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine, producing 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds.
At the upper end of the range is the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 SUV, starting at $179,000. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 boasts a remarkable 4.5-second 0-60 mph time, thanks to its 577-horsepower, 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine, mated to an AMG-tuned 9G-Tronic A/T transmission.
In conclusion, the Mercedes-Benz g-Class promises to deliver the G-Wagen’s legendary luxury and off-road capabilities in a more compact, electrified, and possibly more affordable form, making it an exciting addition to the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
