Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG: Perfect Platform for Portal Axle Conversion
Many G-class owners are being faced with an extremely tough decision: spend $50k upgrading the G55 AMG or G63 AMG the already own, or spend $250k on a G550 4×4². There are definitely benefits to picking up a Squared with a few thousand miles, but it’s not an AMG model. And if you own, or nearly own, your current G-class, you many think twice about writing a $250k check to get a beefed up version of what you already have.
Okay, so let’s be fair. The LeTech portal axle conversion (same as what’s used in the Mercedes G500 4×4² and G550 4×4²) is $69,900 installed. The Tibus portal axle conversion we’re generally using is $24,900 for cars with over 500 HP. So spending around $50k gets you the Tibus portal axle conversion, a 4″ suspension lift to sit as high as the G550 4×4², carbon fiber fender flares, carbon fiber roof spoiler, 37″ tires, and installation.
At that point, there are only a few small differences between the conversion and the original G550 4×4². For example, the running lights on the roof spoiler and on the rear, the spacers between the side markers and the mirrors, and most noticeably, the dual shocks. But good news! We have a dual shock conversion that will make your vehicle look almost identical to the G550 4×4² — other than the fact that, since it’s only good for a 2″ lift, you will sitting about 2″ lower than the Squared at a more garage-friendly height. The original vehicle also has the rear tube bumper assembly. We typically sell the less bulky European version: rear guard and rear tube bumper.
