Mercedes-Benz G-Class Shows Amazing Swimming and Climbing Abilities
There is no other SUV within the three-pointed star marque that exudes the same level of iconic appeal as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Don’t let its boxy body and classy appearance fool you though because the auto is built even for rugged journeys.
What you are about to see here is the G-Class being driven over different obstacles. The first model used in the video is not even the G500, but the 2018 G400d version of the SUV.
The G400d shows how it can easily tread on a body of water without the driver breaking a sweat, and then going up to 30 degrees inclination on rough terrain without any trouble at all. However, the driver later shifts to the G500 for the more challenging iron mountain test with a steep 45 degrees slope. As a bonus, the SUV can be seen going up and down some stairs effortlessly.
The G400d is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel-fed engine like the G350d. The unit has an output of 326 hp and 516 lb-ft torque, which is 44 hp and 74 lb-ft higher than its lesser sibling. Meanwhile, the G500 is equipped with a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine capable of producing up to 422 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque.
From the G500 also came the 4×42 version, which was the successor of the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6. The now-defunct 4×42 has heavy-duty portal axles with large wheels and tires giving it a ground clearance of 17.7 inches and fording depth of 39.4 inches. The SUV was introduced in 2015 but its production run only went until 2017. So far, there are no official announcements of its revival but spy shots hint that Merc may be gearing to bring it back with an electrified powertrain.
