After much anticipation, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its highly anticipated electric iteration of the iconic G-Class, introducing the G 580 with EQ Technology. Contrary to previous speculation, this electrified powerhouse retains the revered G 580 moniker and boasts a range of innovative features that redefine the boundaries of electric off-roading.
Maintaining the G-Class’s legendary off-road capabilities, the G 580 combines robust construction with cutting-edge technology. The model features a robust ladder frame design, selectable Low Range off-road gear reduction, and an independent front suspension, ensuring unparalleled performance in challenging terrain. Additionally, a newly developed solid rear axle enhances stability and control, further solidifying the G-Class’s reputation as the ultimate off-road companion.
Underneath its rugged exterior lies a high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack with a substantial 116 kWh capacity, seamlessly integrated into the ladder frame for optimal protection against water and dirt intrusion. While specific range details are not provided, the G 580 offers both AC and DC charging capabilities, with an 11-kW onboard AC charger and a DC fast charging system capable of delivering up to 200 kW of charging power.
Equipped with four individually controlled electric motors, strategically positioned near each wheel, the G 580 delivers an impressive total output of 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque.
