Electric G-Wagon: Mercedes-Benz G 580 With EQ Technology Launches in Australia at $157K

Mercedes-Benz has taken its legendary G-Wagon into the electric era with the introduction of the G 580 with EQ Technology. This cutting-edge model is now making its way to Australia, featuring the exclusive Edition One variant for early adopters.

Unveiled in March 2024 as part of the W465 lineup, the G 580 maintains the classic, rugged design of the G-Wagon while embracing a fully electric powertrain. Notably, it is the first all-electric Mercedes model that doesn’t carry the traditional EQ branding, despite being based on the Concept EQG. With the G 63 still holding the title as the last V8-powered G-Wagon, this electric alternative offers a fresh take on luxury off-road performance.

As Mercedes-Benz prepares to launch the all-new CLA, the G-Wagon remains a focal point, now capturing attention in Australia. The G 580 with EQ Technology boasts four independent electric motors—each providing 108 kW (145 hp) and 291 Nm (215 lb-ft) of torque, culminating in a combined power output of 432 kW (579 hp) and a staggering 1,164 Nm (859 lb-ft) of torque.

Equipped with a 116 kWh battery pack, the G 580 delivers an impressive driving range of up to 567 km (352 miles) under the NEDC cycle. Its innovative four-motor setup enables advanced off-road features such as G-Steering, allowing for precise wheel control to enhance maneuverability. Additionally, the G-Turn function, akin to a “tank turn,” lets the vehicle pivot in place on loose surfaces by rotating the left and right wheels in opposite directions—similar to what some electric trucks already offer.

Design and performance enhancements set this model apart, including a 26-mm thick underbody shield composed of mixed materials like carbon fiber. Other updates include an optional black radiator grille, aerodynamically refined hood, revised rear wheel arches, and A-pillar cladding. The G 580 also surpasses its gasoline-powered predecessor in water-fording capability, handling depths of up to 850 mm—150 mm more than the ICE-powered G-Wagon.

Off-road capability remains a strong point, with the electric G-Wagon conquering 45-degree inclines and navigating side slopes of up to 35 degrees. Torque vectoring acts as a virtual differential lock, optimizing power distribution for superior traction in challenging conditions.

Inside, the cabin preserves the signature G-Wagon luxury with modern technology at the forefront. The latest MBUX infotainment system dominates the dashboard, featuring a high-resolution digital instrument cluster and widescreen display. Additional innovations include the Off-Road Cockpit mode, MBUX Navigation with Electric Intelligence, a “transparent” hood function, and a premium Burmester 3D Surround Sound system. Charging capabilities include an 11-kW onboard charger and support for 200 kW DC fast charging, achieving a 10–80% charge in just 32 minutes.

Pricing for the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology in Australia starts at AUD 249,900 (approximately $157,000 USD). A premium Edition One variant is also available from AUD 299,000 (around $188,000 USD). Buyers can further personalize their G-Wagon with optional packages such as Night, Manufaktur Exterior, Black Panel, Superior Line Interior Plus, and Interior Comfort.

With its cutting-edge technology, off-road prowess, and unmistakable G-Wagon DNA, the G 580 with EQ Technology is set to make a bold statement in the Australian luxury SUV market.
