Mixed Reactions to Mercedes-AMG G 63 on Disc Wheels: Bold or Over the Top?
When Mercedes-Benz updated the G-Wagen in 2018, it modernized an icon and struck automotive gold. The G-Wagen, in both its Benz and AMG variants, has become a best-seller and a darling of the aftermarket world. Customizers have left their mark on countless units, often starting with a set of distinctive wheels.
While many G-Wagens receive new wheels, others undergo more elaborate transformations. Carlex Design, for instance, can turn a G-Wagen into a rolling piece of jewelry. Some tuners add eccentric body kits and numerous other enhancements, pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
Interior customizations offer virtually limitless possibilities. Enthusiasts can opt for custom upholstery in any imaginable color, install captain’s chairs in the back, create a starry headliner, upgrade to a high-end sound system, or even add rear-hinged back doors. If you can dream it, it can be done.
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 itself is a powerhouse. Its bi-turbo V8 engine, with a 4.0L displacement, produces 577 horsepower (585 ps/430 kW) and 627 pound-foot (850 Nm) of torque. Despite its boxy shape and considerable weight, the G 63 is remarkably agile, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 kph) in just 4.5 seconds. Various tuners offer upgrades to further boost its already impressive power.
However, the maxim “less is more” holds true for many car enthusiasts, including us. A tasteful set of wheels can enhance a vehicle’s appearance more effectively than an over-the-top body kit. The G-Wagen in question, sporting disc wheels by AG Luxury Wheels and customized by Champion Motoring, aims to make a statement. Despite its relatively restrained modifications, it teeters on the edge of being overly ostentatious.
This particular G 63 features a green finish, a bulbar up front, black window trim, privacy windows, and a few other subtle upgrades. The disc alloys, known as the AGL78, come in sizes up to 26 inches and are made in the USA. While these individual upgrades are appealing, they don’t necessarily blend well together. The flashy alloys might be better suited to a Rolls-Royce, and the custom spare wheel holder’s bi-tone look clashes with the rest of the vehicle. The presence of a bulbar seems out of place, especially considering the vehicle’s likely urban use on those slender tires.
This G-Wagen, while not a favorite, is far from the worst we’ve seen. It occupies a middle ground, neither a standout success nor a complete failure. It represents a personal expression of style that might not resonate with everyone.
So, what’s your take on this customized G 63? Does it hit the mark for you, or do you agree that sometimes less truly is more?
