Contemplating Mansory: Transforming the Mercedes-AMG G 63 – Bold or Bizarre?

Mercedes hit the jackpot with the second-generation G-Wagen, preserving the iconic aesthetics of its predecessors while incorporating a touch of modernity and delivering a formidable off-road performance with a luxurious twist.

The robust driving capabilities, rugged appearance, and coveted three-pointed star emblem have made the G-Wagen a favorite among affluent enthusiasts, some of whom opt for extensive customization. Among the myriad tuners in the market, Mansory stands out for its bold and controversial modifications.

Our encounter with the latest Mansory-tuned Mercedes G-Wagen reinforces our reservations about the tuner’s approach. This particular model, adorned in a flamboyant light green hue more suited to Lamborghinis, is embellished with numerous forged carbon add-ons. From the hood, roof elements, and side skirts to the bumper inserts, the exterior modifications exude an audacious flair.

While Mansory swapped the Panamericana grille, a symbol of modern high-end Mercedes-AMGs, for an aftermarket alternative, the G 63 retains its distinctive side exhaust layout. The exhaust tips, seemingly Mansory’s handiwork, coupled with elegantly designed wheels and branded logos, complete the external transformation.

In our opinion, any Mercedes G-Wagen, whether a standard Benz or an AMG variant, deserves a sophisticated, dark interior devoid of over-the-top elements. However, this Mansory creation takes a different route, featuring an excess of white high-end leather upholstery enveloping almost every touchable surface. To maintain coherence with the exterior, green accents are introduced into the cockpit, while Mansory’s branding extends across various elements. The unconventional relocation of the push-button start to the roof adds an extra touch of eccentricity.

Dubbed the P850, this Mansory-tuned Mercedes-AMG G 63 boasts an impressive power output of 850 metric horses, translating to 838 brake horsepower or 625 kilowatts. The tuned bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine produces 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque, an increase of 150 Nm (111 lb-ft) compared to the stock version, resulting in a heightened output of 265 ps (261 hp/195 kW). Mansory claims a 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration time of 3.5 seconds, a one-second improvement, with the top speed raised to 250 kph (155 mph) from 220 kph (137 mph).

Mansory offers various power upgrades for the G 63, including one pushing the performance to 900 ps (887 hp/662 kW) and 1,200 Nm (885 lb-ft) of torque for even more rapid takeoffs. While the increased performance may be appealing, the extravagant visual transformations by Mansory often verge on the extravagant. Considering the unique character of the G-Wagen, we pose the question: If you were a proud owner of a new Mercedes-AMG G 63, would you ever contemplate subjecting it to Mansory’s widebody kit and flamboyant interior enhancements?
