Upcoming Refresh: Mercedes-Benz G-Class Spotted Testing at the Nürburgring
Mercedes-Benz is discreetly putting its iconic G-Class through its paces on the Nürburgring, hinting at an impending update for the beloved off-roader. As the 2024 facelift approaches, the German automaker has chosen to camouflage the vehicle while undergoing testing in Germany.
A recent spy video released by CarSpyMedia on YouTube showcases a camouflaged G-Class cruising around the famed Nürburgring track. This development follows Mercedes-Benz’s recent decision to reopen order books for the G-Class after a two-year hiatus. However, despite this exciting move, those eager to get their hands on a G63 AMG in Australia will still have to contend with long wait times, exacerbated by a price increase of over $60,000.
While the forthcoming update promises a refreshed appearance, the changes will likely be subtle, keeping the distinctive character of the boxy 4×4 intact. Elements like the round headlights, top-mounted indicator lamps, and iconic squared-off shape remain true to the original design that made its debut with the first generation W460 G-Class back in 1979.
Although the camouflage artfully conceals certain details, it’s apparent that the 2024 G-Class will sport a revised front fascia with adjustments around the grille and lower air intakes. Surprisingly, the doors, which are visible and free from camouflage, seem to have remained unchanged in this mid-life facelift.
The rear of the G-Class also features a degree of camouflage, hinting at possible modifications, although the room for visual updates appears limited. While the exterior adjustments might be restrained, more significant changes could be on the horizon for the interior of the 2024 G-Class, with anticipated updates to technology and cabin design.
Under the hood, specifics regarding powertrain modifications remain elusive. However, the Australian market might welcome an updated 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged petrol V8 engine, incorporating a 48V mild-hybrid system to deliver a peak power output of 450kW. It’s worth noting, though, that the G-Class being tested at the Nürburgring appears to be missing the signature soundtrack of Mercedes’ own 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8.
While other global markets enjoy a variety of engine options, Australia remains limited to the top-tier G63 AMG variant. With the G-Class still capturing hearts worldwide, the forthcoming updates will undoubtedly maintain the timeless allure of this off-road icon.
