4×4² LITE Conversion Package for Mercedes G-class

Start with any Mercedes G-class from 2002-2018, add 4×4² LITE Conversion Package and you’ll get the look and style of the Mercedes G550 4×4! For some G-class owners, it won’t go unnoticed that you can fit this vehicle into a parking structure or garage with 7ft clearance. Another benefit to this package is that, while electric side steps are being made for this particular vehicle, most passengers can get in and out of the 4×4² LITE without assistance, including children.

In this case, we started with a 2004 Mercedes-Benz G500. We chose this model year because it would give us the chance to showcase a variety of products, from the G63 Facelift, to front and rear skid plates (you can find a list of what was added below). After comparing the cost to install the G63 Facelift Kit and paint the roof gloss black, with the cost to paint the entire vehicle, we decided to just paint the entire vehicle in Desert Khaki.

The next step was to figure out how to make the G550 4×4² Carbon Fiber Fender Flares work with the front bumper, the rear bumper, and not rub with wheel/tire package with a radical offset. With hindsight, we sould have cut the front bumper back further so the edge of the bumper met up with the edge of the flare (instead of letting them overlap), and then covered the small gap with a bead of urethane.

With the car apart we decided to remove the rubber side moldings, weld-in material, and prep for paint. After the car was painted, and the reverse spare tire mount was installed, we decided it would look cleaner with no spare mount (like the Squared). So we removed the tailgate, removed the spare tire mount, welded-in material, and re-painted the rear door to get the G550 Squared look.

A few other items were painted at the same time, such as the brake calipers in gloss red, panhard/track bars in gloss red, and the roof in gloss black. We decided on a roof spoiler, also painted gloss black instead of carbon fiber, for a more consistent theme.

Parts that couldn’t be painted were powder coated instead. Powder coated parts include the front brush guard, front skid plate, springs, exhaust tips, rear guard, and rear tube bumper.

We decided to add some carbon fiber, but didn’t go overboard. On the exterior, the only carbon fiber parts are Carbon Fiber Hood Attachment, Carbon Fiber Snorkels, Carbon Fiber Mirrors, Carbon Fiber D-pillar Vents, and of course, Carbon Fiber Fender Flares.

On the interior, since our previous project vehicle had carbon fiber trim and a carbon fiber steering wheel, we chose gloss black trim and a gloss black steering wheel. We also replaced the head unit with a more modern system for Bluetooth audio and media, plus a back up camera (which this model year didn’t have). Of course, the old pleated leather wasn’t going to work, so we used a Coachmen Leather Replacement Kit. The kit includes Seats, Headrests, Door Panels in Black Leather with Black Alcantara Inserts and Tan Diamond Stitching. The A-pillars and Headliner were done in matching Black Alcantara with LED “Stars” (turn on with Headlights).

As mentioned, one of the most noticeable differences with this vehicle is the height, thanks to a 4.35″ lift. The complete lift kit includes springs, spring spacers, shocks, new radius arms to correct caster, adjustable track bars to re-center the axles, and wheel spacers (assuming you will be running 35×12.5R20 with stock wheels.

Since we didn’t want to introduce another color (e.g., chrome), we had to use dark lights. Thankfully, we were able to source Dark LEDs for Roof Spoiler, Dark Headlights, Dark LEDs for Headlight Bezel, Dark LEDs for 2-pc Front Lip Spoiler, MANSORY Smoked Turn Indicators, and Smoked Side Markers F/R.

With a 2004 G500, the stock exhaust simply won’t do…so we used an AMG-style Exhaust, powder coated the dual tips on each side in gloss black, removed the pre-muffler resonator (welded-in straight pipe), and wrapped the downpipes in stainless steel mesh.

In addition to the massive fender flares, the 22″ FORGLITE wheels with a gloss black lip and textured satin black center with 35×12.5R22 mud-terrain tires make a huge visual impact.
