2022 G-Class Faces Early Recall
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, popularly referred to as the G-Wagen encountered a serious recall not long after its market debut. Owners of the AMG G63 4×4 Squared have been advised by Mercedes-Benz to halt driving their SUVs until the problem is addressed.
The Mercedes-AMG 63 4×4 Squared represents a high-end variant of the 2022 G-Class, featuring increased power, more amenities, and a heftier price tag. This beast of an SUV is equipped with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that generates 577 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately five seconds.
The most significant difference between the AMG and other 2022 G-Class models lies in the differentials—the very component affected by the recall. MotorTrend reveals that the AMG 63 4×4 Squared employs a portal axle, offering greater ground clearance and improved off-road capabilities.
Cars.com has reported that Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for the 2022 G-Class due to issues with the rear differential in a particular trim package. AMG 63 4×4 Squared models may develop cracks in their rear differential casings, potentially causing leaks. In some instances, the differential housing could completely break, rendering the SUV inoperable. Consequently, owners affected by the recall have been advised not to drive their 2022 G-Class SUVs.
The rear differential is an essential component for the smooth operation of any 2022 G-Class model. These SUVs utilize a traditional rear-wheel drive system, similar to the Jeep Wrangler and the new Ford Bronco. The transmission connects to a driveshaft that transfers power to the rear axle, where power is then distributed to the rear wheels through the rear differential. A nonfunctional differential would make the 2022 G-Class unable to move.
This recall solely impacts the AMG 63 4×4 Squared, not all 2022 G-Class models. Owners can easily confirm online if their G-Class is included in the recall.
To check for recalls, owners can visit the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) website and input their vehicle identification number (VIN) to view any current recall information. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz website provides a VIN search function for recall details.
Certified Mercedes-Benz service centers will inspect and repair each affected 2022 G-Class at no charge to the owner.
